How to Top Up Your WassaSim eSIM: Add Data Without Changing Plans

The WassaSim Team · · 6 min read

Running low on data while abroad? Until now, the only option was to buy an entirely new eSIM plan and scan another QR code. That changes today. WassaSim now supports eSIM top-ups: add data to your existing profile in a few taps, with no new QR code and no reconfiguration.

In this guide, we explain exactly how top-ups work, when you can use them, and how to top up from the web dashboard or the WassaSim mobile app.

How eSIM top-ups work

An eSIM top-up adds a new data allowance directly to your active eSIM profile. Unlike buying a new plan, the top-up does not generate a new QR code. Your phone does not need to download or install anything new.

Here is what happens behind the scenes:

  1. You select a top-up package for your existing eSIM.
  2. You pay (card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay).
  3. WassaSim sends the top-up instruction to the eSIM provider.
  4. The provider provisions the additional data to your profile.
  5. Your device receives the extra data within seconds.

The entire process takes less than a minute. No restart, no new APN configuration, no interruption to your connection.

Step-by-step: how to top up

You can top up from two places: the WassaSim website or the WassaSim mobile app. The steps are nearly identical.

From the web dashboard

  1. Go to your order detail page. You can access it from the confirmation email or from your account dashboard.
  2. Click the "Top up" button. It appears when your eSIM is eligible for a top-up.
  3. Choose a top-up package from the available options. Packages vary by data volume (1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB, etc.).
  4. Pay with your card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
  5. Done. The additional data is added to your eSIM immediately.

From the mobile app

  1. Open the WassaSim app and go to My eSIMs.
  2. Tap on the eSIM you want to top up.
  3. Tap "Top up".
  4. Select your package and confirm payment.
  5. The data is added instantly. You can check your updated balance on the same screen.
No account required. If you purchased your eSIM as a guest, you can still top up using the order access link from your confirmation email.

When can you top up?

Top-ups are available when your eSIM meets these conditions:

eSIM status Top-up available? What to do
Active, data remaining Yes Top up anytime to add more data before you run out.
Active, data depleted Yes Top up to resume browsing immediately.
Expired No The eSIM profile is deactivated. Purchase a new plan instead.
Not yet installed No Install your eSIM first by scanning the QR code, then top up if needed.

The key rule: your eSIM must be active (installed and within its validity period). Once the validity window closes, the profile cannot receive additional data.

How much does a top-up cost?

Top-up packages follow the same pricing structure as regular WassaSim plans. Prices start from a few euros for 1 GB and scale with volume. The exact price depends on the destination country and the data amount.

As with all WassaSim purchases:

  • Prices are displayed excluding VAT. VAT is calculated at checkout based on your location.
  • You can pay with card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
  • Coupons apply to top-ups the same way they apply to regular plans.

Top-up vs. new plan: which one to choose?

If your eSIM is still active and you simply need more data, top up. It is faster, there is nothing to reinstall, and your phone keeps using the same profile seamlessly.

If your eSIM has expired or you are traveling to a different country not covered by the current plan, buy a new plan. You will get a new QR code for a fresh eSIM profile.

Scenario Recommended action
Running low on data, eSIM still valid Top up
Data depleted, validity not expired Top up
eSIM expired Buy a new plan
Traveling to a new, uncovered country Buy a new plan

Tips for managing your eSIM data

  1. Monitor your usage: check your remaining data from the WassaSim app or web dashboard. Top up before you hit zero to avoid any interruption.
  2. Top up early: if you know you will need more data, do not wait until you are offline. Top up while you still have a connection.
  3. Use Wi-Fi when available: save your mobile data for when you really need it. Download maps, videos, and large files over Wi-Fi.
  4. Disable background data: apps updating in the background can drain your allowance. Turn off automatic updates and background refresh for non-essential apps.
